    H W B Davis was an accomplished landscapist and animalier. After completing his studies at the Royal Academy, he exhibited regularly both nationally and internationally: with the Society of British Artists on Suffolk Street, at the Royal Academy from 1852 to 1904, at the British Institution from 1853 until 1893, as well as in Vienna in 1873, and in Paris from 1878 to 1908. His prolific career reached a climax in 1877 when he was elected to the Royal Academy.

    His landscapes of Wales, Scotland and Northern France began as highly detailed views, finished in a technique that showed the influence of the Pre-Raphaelite painters. During the 1870s he broadened his style, ad...
