    William John Caparne (1856-1940) was born in Newark into a family of horticulturists. He studied art at the Slade School and National Gallery, London, the Académié Julian and the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris. In the 1880's William began a series of artistic tours, visiting the Channel Isles, Scilly Isles and later Europe. He exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in watercolours and continued exhibiting until 1896. Around this time Caparne moved to Guernsey where he spent his time between painting and developing iris.
