    Following in the footsteps of British animalier Sir Edwin Landseer, William Woodhouse painted sympathetic and nostalgic portraits of working animals - especially hunting dogs and horses - during his career. Born to a family of fishermen in Morecambe, England, Woodhouse's talent was recognized during his early school years and he later attended the Mechanics Institute in Lancaster where he took courses in art. Although he painted portraits and landscapes, his specialty was the portrayal of animals whose animate expressions he deftly translated into human emotions.
