    Known primarily for portrait painting, Wilton Lockwood, was also a successful painter of floral still life with much attention to decorative pattern. He was born with the name of Robert Wilton Lockwood, which was derived from Wilton, Connecticut, his place of birth. His mother died when he was four years old, and he was raised by relatives in Connecticut. By the early 1880s he was in New York City, working as an assistant glass painter and etcher in the atelier of John La Farge.

    In 1886, Lockwood went to Paris, and stayed there for the next ten years. He studied at the Academie Julian under Jean-Joseph Benjamin Constant, and also spent time in Munich with Frank Duveneck. Several times during this period, he returned to the United Sta...
