    Xavier Grau was a Spanish artist who trained and taught at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. He started as a conceptual artist but later devoted himself fully to painting. He was part of the "painting-painting" movement in Catalonia, which vindicated pictorial practice from the perspective of abstract language.

    Grau's work evolved towards an abstraction that maintained the internal tension between color and drawing without reducing the vividness of the color or the movement of its surfaces, contained by a rhythmic formal structure.
