Sun Yuntai was born in Huangxian, Shandong Province. In 1931, he went to Russia where he apprenticed to a professional oil painter in his studio. Between 1930 and 1950, he participated in numerous exhibitions between teachers and students, as well as holding solo exhibitions in Moscow and Tokyo. From 1950 to 1960, twenty of his paintings were colleted by The Beijing Fishing Platform Hotel, subsequent to which he worked on a tremendous commission in oil, named "Forest", for The Great Wall of the People, which he was completed in conjunction with fellow artists Fu Baoshi and Guan Shanyue. During 90"s, he held many solo exhibitions in Taiwan and Hong Kong and has been pulished in "Sun Yuntai"s Painting Collection.
