He was especially noted for his depictions of female figures and of "huge, amorous allegories" (Stern), which have become prime examples of Rococo era art. Emperor Napolean gave public endorsement of Prud'hon by commissioning him to do portraits of the Empress Josephine and Marie-Louise and to give them drawing lessons.
