He initially worked for a publisher in Paris and was especially focused on lithography. From 1834 to 1835 Giraud went to Rome, which was followed by numerous trips through Europe and the Orient (e.g. Algeria, Tunisia, Constantinople and Egypt). In Paris Giraud belonged to the literary and artistic circles, so that he was often commissioned as theater and stage designer, particularly due to the initiative taken by Victor Hugo and Dumas.
