Jakob Savery the Elder was the brother of the landscape and animal painter Roelant Savery, and a pupil of Hans Bol in Mechelen. Savery was principally a miniaturist and draughtsman, and very few of his paintings have survived. His Flemish landscapes are narrative in style in the tradition of Brueghel, but use a much more vivid colour palette and rapid brushwork. They also display parallels to the landscapes of his brother Roelant, who was also his pupil.
