After the war he studied from 1945 to 1948 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart with Willi Baumeister and from 1948 to 1955 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin with Hans Kuhn and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. During his studies, in 1948, he married Ute Jaina Schlemmer, the daughter of the painter Oskar Schlemmer. In 1950, son Raman was born.
