A native of Neuwied, Germany, he spent the years between 1835 and 1846 as a pupil of the Düsseldorf Academy under Ferdinand Theodor Hildebrandt, know for his color and originality, and Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow, a member of the "Nazarites" of Rome who held a zeal for religious art. Not a great artist, Schadow nevertheless made an excellent teacher. Siegert continued to study in his travels through Belgium, Holland, France and Germany. He finally settled in Dusseldorf in 1851.
