Surprisingly, Gustave chose an artistic path rather than follow his family with a career in politics or the military, befitting the upper stratum of society into which he had been born. Gustave studied under Léon Bonnat in Paris, eventually becoming a successful, respected artist. His works featured the French landscape as well as scenes from Italy and southern Germany. Surprisingly, Gustave chose an artistic path rather than follow his family with a career in politics or the military, befitting the upper stratum of society into which he had been born.
