He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, was badly wounded, and discharged so that he and his wife were able to travel to Paris in 1864. That October the two stayed in Brittany. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, was badly wounded, and discharged so that he and his wife were able to travel to Paris in 1864. That October the two stayed in Brittany.
