Harald studied under Peter Christian Thamsen Skovgaard and attended the Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen from 1865-1867. He supplied the Charlottenborg exhibitions from 1868 and was influenced by Thorvald Niss and his friend Godfred Christensen. Harald went on study trips to Italy in 1871-1872 and 1874-1875. In the late 1870s to early 1880s, he suffered from a serious illness and temporarily abandoned painting.
