Born in Germany, he and his family came to America in 1843. They settled in St. Louis where he spent considerable time with the Indians who camped near this western gateway. In 1852, he returned to Germany, studying four years at the Dusseldorf Academy. He learned careful draftsmanship and fastidious execution and applied this to his interest in the exploits of the American Indian.
