In 1903, Francis La Monaca, originally from Italy, abandoned his military career and decided to move to Paris where he entered the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and trained in the studios of Gabriel-Jules Thomas and Jean-Antoine Injalbert. Although he was part of the avant-garde circle, La Monaca exhibited at the Salon des artistes français in 1909. He met with some success with Parisian high society, of whom he painted many portraits.
