In Munich he was taken on as a student by Carl von Piloty. Starting 1878 he was professor at the academy in Munich. Defregger transformed Piloty's realistic style of history painting into one which was more genre-like. Thematically he showed a preference for tyrolese history, most especially scenes of farm and... In Munich he was taken on as a student by Carl von Piloty. Starting 1878 he was professor at the academy in Munich. Defregger transformed Piloty's realistic style of history painting into one which was more genre-like. Thematically he showed a preference for tyrolese history, most especially scenes of farm and country life as well as from the fight for independence in Tyrol in 1809.
