At 15 he was selling cartoons to the New York Journal and New York World. After graduation from Germantown High School, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Chase, Anshutz, and Breckenridge, and at the Rose Valley School near Philadelphia. At 15 he was selling cartoons to the New York Journal and New York World. After graduation from Germantown High School, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Chase, Anshutz, and Breckenridge, and at the Rose Valley School near Philadelphia. Due to ill health, he sought a milder climate, and in 1905 he moved to Los Angeles where he established a studio in the cupola of the Methodist Church. After graduation from Germantown High School, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Chase, Anshutz, and Breckenridge, and at the Rose Valley School near Philadelphia.
