Jean Martial of Bretonnière Frédou, was born in 1711. Jean Fredou was a portrait painter in oil and pastel, who was trained at the Royal Academy. Fredou was named "King of the cabinet painter" in 1755. He performed both original compositions and copies of royal portraits such as Louis - Michel Van Loo, Jean - Marc Nattier or Maurice - Quentin de la Tour. In 1776, he became "first painter to the King" and received an order for eleven portraits representing the children of the king in hussar... Read full biography

Fredou was named "King of the cabinet painter" in 1755. He performed both original compositions and copies of royal portraits such as Louis - Michel Van Loo, Jean - Marc Nattier or Maurice - Quentin de la Tour. In 1776, he became "first painter to the King" and received an order for eleven portraits representing the children of the king in hussar clothes. During the Restoration, he is reinstated in his title of "first painter of the King" with Louis XVIII. Jean Martial Fredou passed away in 1795.
