Some of the paintings Backhouse sold were on shells or on small postcard-sized board. He was listed in Wises Trades Directory as an artist from 1896-1897 with an address on Newton Road in Auckland. By the 1890s, he was a full-time artist and sketched scenes of New Zealand and Australia, as well as making studies of birds and insects. Backhouse died in Wairoa, Hawkes Bay on October 6, 1908, and was buried there.
