He then settled in New York City. Barney had his first solo show, a fusion of sculpture and psycho-sexual performance art, in New York at Barbara Gladstone Gallery in October, 1991. At the Venice Biennale of 1993, he was awarded "the Europe 2000" Prize, and in 1996, the Hugo Boss Award in honor of Hugo Boss, men's clothing designer.
