Michael Croissant was born in Landau. In 1942 he began an apprenticeship there as a stonemason from 1943 to 1946 at the Schule des Handwerks in Kaiserslautern. After that he attended a private art school in Munich for three years before he changed to the academy where the sculptor Toni Stadler was his teacher. Afterwards he worked as freelance artist until he got a professorship at the Städelschule in Frankfurt in 1966 which he held until 1988. Croissant's work shows a figurative abstraction.... Afterwards he worked as freelance artist until he got a professorship at the Städelschule in Frankfurt in 1966 which he held until 1988. Croissant's work shows a figurative abstraction. Together with the sculptor Franz Bernhard, Croissant is considered a pioneer of floor sculptures, as he placed his characters without base directly on the floor.
