After training as a sculptor from 1880, initially at the Dresden School of Arts and Crafts and later at the Academy in Munich, he moved to the Grand Ducal Baden Art School in Karlsruhe together with his teacher Herrmann Baisch in 1888. In 1891, he bought Augustenburg Castle in the nearby village of Grötzingen and thus created living space for the artists of the 'Grötzinger Malerkolonie'.
