He worked for a time with I.C.I. in England, in mining in Zambia and South Africa, and as a teacher in Nigeria. Copperwhite returned to Ireland in 1965 and married two years later. He built his own studio/gallery onto the family home and while he did a great deal of work there, he much preferred to paint outdoors, especially in Connemara. His response to the landscape is immediate with a fairly rapid application of paint, sometimes in impasto fashion, using knife or brush.
