He was a founding member of the Southern Vermont Arts Center, and many of his paintings depicted rural scenes of his region. He made an occasional trip to the western United States. In New York as a young man, he was a student in New York City of William Merritt Chase, Frank DuMond, and Arthur Dow. Later he was elected to membership of the Salmagundi Club, which held exhibitions for its members.
