The London artist William Adolphus Knell was an important marine painter of the 19th century. Between 1825 and 1866, he exhibited his works regularly at the Royal Academy and was occasionally commissioned by highly respected personalities such as Queen Victoria. In his paintings, William Knell mainly depicted views of the English coast and sometimes included representations of historic ships of past centuries. Old Dutch masters of his genre had a great stylistic impact on his artistic development, whereas towards the end of his life, Knell increasingly approached the English School.
