Song Yinke (1902-1990) was born in Nanjing, Jiangsu province. Because his family was poor he dropped out of secondary school in Nanjing. At the age of 15 he started drawing book illustrations for the Commercial Press in Shanghai, and taught himself figure and bird-and-flower painting, following the styles of Ren Bonian and Wu Changshuo in the Shanghai School.
