He spent his youth in Los Angeles but later lived in the Big Sur area and then settled near Santa Barbara. For fifteen years, he was a commercial artist, creating everything from billboards to aerospace drawings, but changed to fine art and plein-air painting to combine his love of the outdoors with painting.
