He spent his youth in Los Angeles but later lived in the Big Sur area and then settled near Santa Barbara. In 2000, he received the $10,000 Granville Redmond Memorial Purchase Prize for his landscape "New Dawn," which is the inaugural purchase for the California Art Academy and Museum in Pasadena, California, a facility that opened in 2002.
