A colorful, adventurous personality, Andrew Winter was a painter who spent his early years as a mariner, sailing as a mate on square riggers and later on British and American steamships. He was a native of Estonia and became an American citizen in 1921. He studied at the National Academy of Design and in 1925, returned to Europe on a travel fellowship and studied in Rome and Paris.
