In 1967 she obtained her second Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from the School of Fine and Applied Art at Boston University. Five years later, she earned her Master's degree of Fine Art in painting from Hunter College in New York. In 1978, Bohnen was awarded a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).
