He was born in Borger, Texas, and by age 14 was selling his paintings and had gallery representation. His parents encouraged his talent. He studied for several semesters at the University of Texas and took upper level art classes, and then set out, finding workshops to further his art education. A trip to Taos, New Mexico changed his life because he discovered the painting of Sergei Bongart, a Russian immigrant painter and teacher who lived both in Idaho and California. He studied for several semesters at the University of Texas and took upper level art classes, and then set out, finding workshops to further his art education. A trip to Taos, New Mexico changed his life because he discovered the painting of Sergei Bongart, a Russian immigrant painter and teacher who lived both in Idaho and California. Going to Idaho to find Bongart, Sahli took classes from him, and then Bongart offered Sahli a scholarship to study with him in California. Sahli remained a student until Bongart's death in 1985....
