Waugh was known for his expressive seascapes like this one. Strokes of bold color reveal themselves close up but blend together from a distance. An unusual feature is the distant island, which is probably off the coast of Maine. In outstanding condition, no touch up. In a quality 22k gilt frame.

A beautifully vibrant and rare Barbadian scene (c. 1921) by this important American painter, a luminous work that captures the incoming waves as the palm trees sway in the tropical breeze. "Under the Trade Winds" was painted on the northern side of Barbados around Tent Bay. Please inquire.
