John D. Delane was born in California in 1869 to parents who had migrated from the eastern United States. The extent and source of his art training is not known, but he produced both watercolor and oil paintings with a variety of subjects. By far the most common are his oil paintings of mountain landscapes rendered on the grey paperboard panels popular with Northwest artists in the 1920s and 1930s. By 1919 he was living in Seattle, where he became friends with Leroy D. Updyke, the two collaborating on a large oil on canvas painting of Mt. Rainier. Both later produced paintings from the Canmore, Alberta area, and it seems likely that they traveled there together. Both relied heavily on sales to tourists and at local fairs to provide income....
