He studied art at Yale University and the Art Students League, during which time he worked primarily as an illustrator for New York newspapers and magazines. After studying in Paris in 1925 and 1926, he turned seriously to painting. In 1929 he was introduced to the egg-tempera medium, which he used extensively the rest of his life. Brush, wash, pen and ink on paper 1945 Signed, titled and dedicated in ink, lower right recto. The subject was Mary Elizabeth Nicholls of Pittsfield, MA, an artist. She was in NYC on VE Day and no doubt, had met and/or studied with the artist. Paper used was from a pamphlet of an English art show that had been traced to Mr. Marsh in 1944.
