In 1916 he graduated from the art department at Stanford University, had further instruction from Armin Hansen and Clark Hobart, and then went to NYC to study at the ASL under Frank V. DuMond. In 1916 he graduated from the art department at Stanford University, had further instruction from Armin Hansen and Clark Hobart, and then went to NYC to study at the ASL under Frank V. DuMond. His art career was interrupted while serving in the Army during WWI. After marrying art student Dorothy Welsh, the Olivers returned to Monterey in 1923 and helped run the family business.
