He. roamed the fields and beaches around Pymatuning Lake, collecting stone artifacts, which increased his love of history and native cultures. Griffing is a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, studying illustration. After a thirty year career in advertising, he began to paint, in 1991, the Eastern Woodland Indian of the 18th century, an early fascination. His paintings focus on the time of chaos and uncertainty for the woodland tribes as they struggled to survive the encroachment of Europeans.
