His coloring was unconventional, bright and heavy. He liked to use Western red pigment to color the fruits he painted. His landscape painting was done with fine and delicate strokes, classical, long roll, style. The trees were very lifelike and vivid. In 1927, he began study under Wang Tongyu, a former scholar-official of the imperial court i the Qing period who had settled at Nanxiang, and under Shanghai painter Feng Chaoran on the recommendation of Wang.
