Friedrich started out as a portrait and genre painter. He turned to painting horses in the 1850s with great success. In contrast to his father, Adolf Friedrich made a living from his painting. Friedrich started out as a portrait and genre painter. He turned to painting horses in the 1850s with great success. In contrast to his father, Adolf Friedrich made a living from his painting. Starting in 1863, the Saxon Art Association regularly acquires Friedrich's paintings for twenty years. Gemäldegalerie Dresden was also one of his customers. Adolf Friedrich passed away in 1889.
