Agus Suwage was born in 1959 in Purworejo, Central Java, Indonesia. He graduated in Graphic Design from the Bandung Institute of Technology in 1986 but switched to fine art using popular symbols and iconography in his paintings, sculptures and installations after a stint as a graphic designer. When Suwage turned 50 in 2009, he had a major retrospective featuring 99 works from 1985-2009 called 'Still Crazy After All These Years' at the Jogjakarta National Museum.
