He studied at the Bauhaus Dessau/Berlin under prominent artists such as Joost Schmidt, Mies van der Rohe, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Josef Albers. After a period of unemployment, he was conscripted as a construction worker from 1935 to 1945. Hennig was a founding member of the group "Bildender Künstler" at the Kulturbund Zwickau and later became a member of the Verband Bildender Künstler (VBK) of the GDR.
