He was born in Odessa, Ukraine, where he spent his childhood and youth, close to the Black Sea. His first apprenticeship, together with his grandfather, Ivan Konstantinovici Aivazovski, known as a romantic landscape painter, a feature that his nephew later acquired. He studied art in Germany where he graduated from the Berlin Fine Arts Academy and then from Dresden, continuing to deepen his knowledge in Munich and Paris.
