Alfred Sohn-Rethel (1875-1958) was born in Düsseldorf, his father was the portrait painter Carl Rudolf Sohn (1845-1908) and his mother Else, the daughter of the well-known painter Alfred Rethel (1816-1859). Sohn-Rethel began his studies in Düsseldorf, later he went to Paris. He was a member of the 'Free Association Düsseldorf artist'. Some of his works are represented in the collections of the city of Düsseldorf.
