Bela Ivanyi Grunwald studied under Bertalan Székely and Károly Lotz at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. He then completed his studies in Munich and at the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1896, he went to Nagybánya (today Romania), in order to devote himself to plein air painting and became a member of the local artists' colony. From 1911 to 1918, he headed the artist colony in Kecskemét, Ungarn.
