He was meticulous with his paintings for historical significance. The sea always has strongly influenced Mr. Roberts. He grew up on the Bayfront of Long Island, New York, where he had his own sailboat before he had a bicycle. After seven years in the U.S. Navy, he and his bride, Deedee, owned and sailed the Chesapeake Bay schooner Delaware for two years on Long Island Sound.
