Carl Franz Bauer was born in Vienna and studied at the Viennese academy under Christian Griepenkerl (1839-1912). He completed his studies in 1901 and began to focus on the depiction of sport and breeding horses. He illustrated several books on horses both at home and abroad. His works, predominantly in gouache and watercolours, soon became a big success.
