His naturalistic conception of light, air, water and clouds is entirely in the tradition of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, whose private student he was for a few months in 1845. Sørensen developed a romantically oriented marine painting, as atmosphere played an important role for him. He accompanied the Danish fleet on numerous journeys, including during the Three Years' War (1848-1851) he was on board a squadron that crossed the North Sea.
