Carl Sundt-Hansen was a Norwegian artist born in 1841. He traveled to Paris in 1866 and stayed there in the 1860s, becoming one of the few Norwegian artists to do so. His main work from the Paris years is "A Savoyard ironing a Sulfur Stick to light his Paper Cigarette" which was exhibited in Kristiania Kunstforening in 1867. Carl Sundt-Hansen was a Norwegian artist born in 1841. He traveled to Paris in 1866 and stayed there in the 1860s, becoming one of the few Norwegian artists to do so. His main work from the Paris years is "A Savoyard ironing a Sulfur Stick to light his Paper Cigarette" which was exhibited in Kristiania Kunstforening in 1867. The painting showed a new attitude, realistic and optimistic, with a clear and true depiction of the boy in the painting. Sundt-Hansen was appointed a knight of the Royal Vasa Order by the Swedish king Carl XV after he found the artist's work impressive. Sundt-Hansen returned to Norway in 1869 and changed his name from Carl Frederik Hansen to Carl Sundt-Hansen in 1889. He died in 1907.
