As a young painter he was a member of the "Gillespie Group," which was a loose collection of artists, including George Hetzel, Alfred S. Wall, Joseph R. Woodwell, David Gilmore Blythe and Jasper Lawman. Linford was one of the first artists to discover Scalp Level*, a small town, which became a favorite artists' place until the late 1890s.
