Bisschop established a studio in The Hague in 1855 and exhibited widely in the Netherlands, France, and England. He painted many interior scenes in Hindeloopen, known for traditional dress. He was appointed Ridder in the Order of the Crown of Oak in 1863. In 1869, he married Catharina Swift, who later became a well-known painter under the name of Kate Bisschop-Swift. They settled in Scheveningen in a villa called "Friesland"
